Youtube Makeup Tutorials

I never learned how to put on makeup right. My mom had serious issues about makeup and her appearance, and would never even leave the house without a bag stuffed with everything she’d need to do her makeup from scratch. In case she was ever caught in a car wash, I guess. I seemed to know from a young age that my mom was not the person to go to to learn a healthy approach to makeup, but the girls at school all just seemed to know somehow, and the girls at the makeup counter just wanted to sell me everything they made.

Until now I’ve gotten by with a few tricks I’ve gleaned from magazines and experimentation, but I never felt like I really knew what I was doing. I just knew what I needed to get by. Project Put Together made me face what I had to learn, get brave about trying new things, and figure out what really works for the face I have. So like everyone in this internet age who needs to learn something new, I turned to YouTube.

Pixiwoo. I love her for her adorable accent, her stunning green eyes, and for how she breaks down celebrity looks into something that seems actually achievable. This girl has a stunning depth of knowledge of technique and products. I watch her and take notes.

EnKore. This guy is such an excellent teacher. Watching him I really feel like I am learning fundamentals that are going to allow me to actually get creative someday.

Kandee Johnson. She is adorable, and in such an authentic way that you can’t help but be charmed by her. And then get inspired, and then learn all kinds of things including special effect makeup. She’ll keep you in Halloween costumes for years.

Youtube makeup tutorials are kind of a rabbit hole. I have lost more than one morning watching video after video, only awaking from my trance by the sound of the bus horn telling me Atti’s back from school. There is so much I missed out on learning, and so much art people are creating, it’s absolutely transcendent. How did anybody learn any of this stuff before Youtube?

  1. OMG I am so behind the times, it never even occured to me to learn new makeup techniques online! I was astounded the other day when I dabbed a bit of highlighter between my eyelid and my nose at how it brightened up my whole face! LOL! I'd seen it somewhere and thought "oh that can't possibly work" but I tried it anyway.
Geez, now I have to go learn all about makeup again. Probably for the best, at 45 I do not have the flawless skin I once had!

  2. I love Pixiwoo! They've taught me a lot of things about makeup. They're idiot proof. I feel some other YouTubers I watch make everything so complicated and confusing, but when Sam or Nic from Pixiwoo explain the SAME CONCEPT, I get it. I think it's because they're both makeup teachers and working professionals, so they understand how to break down something to make it super simple. No crazy terms, just simple words and advice!

(If you haven't tried Sam's brushes….oh, you should. GODLY. I just acquired my second one. I'm still working up to buying one of the kits. I keep spending all of my allowance on, you know, ModCloth. Ha ha ha ha ha. Or nail polish.)
